The Silent Heroes Among Us

AI ART, “Caregivers = Heros”

There are quiet heroes among us—people whose strength doesn’t always make headlines, but whose impact is deeply felt every single day. Today, this is a heartfelt shout-out to the caregivers who stand beside individuals living with ALS.

Caregiving in the world of ALS is unlike anything most people will ever experience. It’s not just helping with daily routines, it’s stepping into a role that requires patience, adaptability, resilience, and an extraordinary depth of love. As ALS gradually changes the physical abilities of a person, caregivers become steady anchors in an ever-shifting reality.

You are the ones who make sure electronic devices are set up so we can stay in touch with the world or learn new ways to communicate when words become difficult.

You are the hands that help when muscles can no longer cooperate.

You are the calm presence in moments of frustration, fear, and exhaustion.

And you do all of this while carrying your own emotions, often quietly.

What makes caregivers so remarkable is not just what they do, but how they do it. There is tenderness in the smallest acts: adjusting a pillow, lifting a cup for a drink, sharing a laugh, sitting in comfortable silence, or simply being there when the day feels heavy. These moments may seem small from the outside, but they are everything.

Caregivers also become fierce advocates. You navigate appointments, treatments, equipment, and decisions that can feel overwhelming. You learn quickly, adapt constantly, and fight tirelessly to ensure your loved one has dignity, comfort, and quality of life.

But here’s something that needs to be said more often: you matter too.

Your strength does not mean you don’t get tired.

Your love does not mean you don’t feel overwhelmed.

Your dedication does not mean you have to do it all alone.

Taking time for yourself is not selfish—it’s necessary. Whether it’s a few quiet minutes, a walk outside, reading a book, playing music or asking for help when needed, caring for yourself allows you to keep showing up in the powerful way you already do.

To every caregiver supporting someone living with ALS: thank you.

Thank you for your patience when days are long.

Thank you for your courage when things feel uncertain.

Thank you for your compassion, your humor, your humanity.

You are seen. You are appreciated. And you are making a difference in ways that words can barely capture.

In a world that often celebrates big, visible victories, you remind us that love—steady, enduring, and quiet—is one of the most powerful forces there is.

And that deserves to be honored every single day.

I want to give a shout-out to my silent heroes, my devoted spouse who provides selfless love on our ALS journey together.  My daughters and their partners who provide encouragement, support and care for us both. The community of family, neighbors and friends that surround us by helping with my care, providing meals, friendship and emotional support. Most importantly, I thank God for all these wonderful people he has placed in my life.

Thank your silent heroes today!
